Relief Chest Opened for Haiti Earthquake Update: 16:00 - 01 February 2010

In response to requests from members of the Craft and as the extent of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti has become clearer, the Council of The Freemasons’ Grand Charity has opened a dedicated Relief Chest.  This centrally administered service is for those who would like their donation for victims of the earthquake to be part of a co-ordinated Masonic response.

This announcement follows an earlier decision by the President of the Grand Charity to approve the immediate payment of grants totalling £30,000 in support of emergency aid efforts in Haiti.

Any individual Freemason or Lodge wishing to make a donation via the Council’s Relief Chest and in support of the longer-term recovery efforts can do so by sending a cheque payable to “The Freemasons’ Grand Charity” to: Relief Chest Scheme, 60 Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5AZ and noting that it is to be paid into the Haiti Earthquake 2010 Relief Chest No. E0125

Tax payers wishing The Freemasons’ Grand Charity to claim tax relief on their donation, must complete a Gift Aid Donation Form available from the Relief Chest department on 020 7395 9246.

Today the Provincial Grand Master for Cumberland & Westmorland R.W.Bro. Norman James Thompson has released funds to the Cumbria Community Foundation Flood appeal, with an initial donation of £10,000.

The Freemason’s Grand Charity and Provinces around the country are supporting our efforts with financial assistance and the first cheques have now started to arrive. Alongside their donation, the Province of Gloucestershire has been particularly helpful with practical advice, as their Province suffered badly from flooding in 2007.

The Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Keith Young has today spoken on BBC Radio Gloucestershire about the support C&W Freemasons are offering to Brethren, their dependants and the community at large.

Urgent Action Update: 14:00 - 23 November 2009

The recent flooding in Cumbria has been devastating to many Brethren, their families, dependants and to Lodge widows in the area. The Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. Norman James Thompson is eager to ensure that immediate relief and assistance is made available to all affected Brethren and their families.

All Lodge Secretaries and Almoners have now been contacted with an urgent request to identify those Brethren who have become victims of the flooding. The Brethren of the Province have already been involved in providing immediate assistance including the supply of clean water, food and where possible beginning the clean up process.

Help from The Freemason’s Grand Charity is already in place, and a number of other Provinces have generously sent financial donations to help with meeting immediate expenses for those Brethren most in need.
It is essential that Brethren throughout the affected areas of the Province also remain vigilant over the coming weeks and months in identifying anxious and distressed Brethren, families and widows, so that we can provide help and support as soon as possible. Please keep your Lodge Almoner informed of the situation of those around you who may be affected.

If urgent assistance is required, please inform the Provincial Grand Almoner W.Bro. Bill Bewley directly on (Home) 015394 34095 or (Mobile) 07770 932708.

Welcome from the Provincial Grand Master

I extend a warm welcome to this the website of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cumberland and Westmorland.

Freemasonry is intended to offer those who are members the opportunity to make themselves better individuals and demonstrate to others that they are considerate, kind and charitable by word and deed to those less fortunate than themselves irrespective of whether or not they are Freemasons.

I hope this website will be of interest to both Freemasons and to non masons who wish to learn more and may be thinking of joining our international fraternity which has been in existence for over 300 years.

It aims to bring together men of goodwill regardless of background, religion or political persuasion; it promotes tolerance, charity and integrity.

If you require further information please contact The Provincial Grand Secretary, Masonic Hall, Station Road, Kendal, Cumbria, LA9 6BT or any local Lodge.
