A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE PROVINCE

The Cumbrian Lodges come under the Province of the old Cumberland and Westmorland counties which account for Lodges meeting in:  Alston, Ambleside, Appleby, Aspatria, Brampton, Carlisle, Cleator Moor, Cockermouth, Dalston, Egremont, Frizington, Kendal, Keswick, Kirkby Lonsdale, Kirkby Stephen, Maryport, Millom, Milnthorpe, Penrith, Seascale, Sedbergh, Silloth, St. Bees, Wath Brow, Whitehaven, Wigton, Windermere and Workington.  The majority of these Lodges hold their Meetings each month between September and June.

Each Lodge is presided over by a Master and two Wardens, and has between twenty and one hundred and fifty members.

All Lodges are connected by a regulatory body for the Province of Cumberland and Westmorland and meet under the auspices of the United Grand Lodge of England.  The Lodges are divided into six groups in Cumbria for administrative purposes.

There are many social occasions organised by the groups and Lodges within them at which wives, families and friends enjoy meeting and creating long-lasting friendships.  These occasions range from the formal Annual Balls or Ladies Evenings held at various venues in the county to social gatherings and informal activities designed to raise funds for charity.  Examples of these are sponsored walks and cycle rides, bingo, race nights, barbeques and dances.

Charitable fund-raising is an intrinsic element of Freemasonry and in addition to supporting masonic Charities, the Lodges of the area have a tradition of substantial support for projects at the West Cumberland Hospital, various churches and hospices as well as donating to, and supporting many small local appeals and communities.

If a friend has pointed you to this website, it is because he enjoys being a Freemason and feels that you deserve the opportunity to know more about it.  He cannot properly do much more, though he will readily respond if you express interest.  Anyone knowing a Mason can ask him for more information.  He will give it willingly.
