THE STEWARD'S PROBLEM!
During the Ladies Night the Stewards are selling blocks of Raffle Tickets at 10 Pounds a 'block' or 25 Pounds for three blocks. They sell three Brethren 3 blocks of tickets and mistakenly take for 30 Pounds (10 Pounds per Brother).
When the Senior Warden checks he notices the Stewards' error of incorrectly charging 30 Pounds instead of 25 Pounds.
The Senior Warden then told told the Stewards to return 5 Pounds to each of the three Brethren.
The Stewards, knowing that the three Brethren would not be able to divide 5 Pounds evenly, decided to put 2 Pounds in the Charity collection and to give the Brethren only 3 Pounds.
The Brethren were very happy because they paid only 27 Pounds for the blocks of tickets (9 Pound each).
However, if they paid 27 Pounds and the Stewards gave 2 Pounds to the Charity collection, that adds up to 29 Pounds.
What happened to the other Pound?
ANSWER
There is a saying that you cannot add apples and oranges.
If you have 3 apples and 2 oranges do you have 5 apples? No.
Do you have 5 oranges? No.
You have five fruits, but the number of apples and oranges has not changed.
Similarly, you cannot add real money and what they think they paid.
When we count only real money, the Brethren have 3 pounds, the Stewards have put 2 Pounds into the Charity collection, and the Raffle has 25 Pounds. That is 30 Pounds total.
