  WHICH DOOR IS IT?

The Wardens of a Lodge get bored one Lodge Meeting and decide to test the Logical thinking of visiting Brethren.

They tell the Visiting Brethren that they have a choice of two doors to enter; one leads to the Lodge Room and the other is the toilet.

The Wardens give each Visiting Brother a card with the following:
In front of each door stands a Warden who knows which door is the Lodge Room and which door is the toilet, but one of the Wardens will always tell a lie and the other one will always tell the truth.  To go through the correct door, you are allowed to ask one Warden only one question that can be answered "yes" or "no", but unfortunately, you do not know which Warden is the liar.  You will be banished to the Temple of Logical Illiteracy (and the toilet!) if you fail in your quest.

What question do the Visiting Brethren ask to enter the Lodge Room?

  ANSWER

If you ask a Warden directly "Are you guarding the door to the Lodge Room?", and the answer is "no", he could be guarding the Lodge Room Door and be lying about it, or he could be telling the truth and the Lodge Room is behind the other door.

The question that you ask has to involve both Wardens at the same time:
"Would the other Warden say that you are guarding the path to the Lodge Room?"
When you ask a Warden this question, there are 4 cases:

  1. The liar is guarding the door to the Lodge Room:  He answers "no" because the truthful Warden would say "yes".
  2. The liar is not guarding the door to the Lodge Room:  He answers "yes" because the truthful Warden would say "no".
  3. The truth teller is guarding the door to the Lodge Room:  He answers "no" because the other Warden (liar) would say "no".
  4. The truth teller is not guarding the door to the Lodge Room:  He answers "yes" because the other Warden (liar) would say "yes".
So, if a Warden answers "no", he is guarding the door to the Lodge Room.  If he answers "yes", the Lodge Room is behind the other door.  Notice that even though you now know which is the door to the Lodge Room, you still don't know which Warden is the liar.  To find out who is the liar you would have to ask a question like:  "Would the other Warden say that you always tell the truth?"  A reply of "no" means you are talking to the truth teller, a reply of "yes" means you are talking to the liar.

Needless to say, on that Meeting, the majority of Visitors allegedly 'answered a call of nature' before entering the Lodge Room!
